When to Use NEMS

When you should call NEMS

We provide urgent medical care and advice whenever your own GP surgery is closed. We are only available when your surgery is closed.

We provide assistance when you need urgent medical help that will not wait until your GP surgery re-opens.

Please note that we do not operate a walk-in service and if you arrive without an appointment you may be asked to come back later.

When not to use NEMS

If you think your situation is a life-threatening emergency, such as a serious accident or injury, a possible heart attack, severe uncontrollable bleeding, loss of consciousness or poisoning, you should call 999 and request an ambulance.

If you sustain an injury that is not life-threatening, you can visit your nearest hospital Emergency Department (Queen’s Medical Centre Nottingham, Sherwood Forest Hospital Sutton in Ashfield – King’s Mill, or Newark Hospital).

Alternatively, you can visit any of the local minor injury units and walk in centres where you can get advice and treatment for minor injuries and illnesses:

Nottingham Walk-In Centre

Stapleford Walk-In Centre

Ilkeston Minor Injury Unit

Routine medical advice & routine appointments should be arranged with your own surgery when they are open. If you need non-urgent health information or general advice, you should call NHS Direct on 0845 46 47 or use their online or digital-TV services.
