Welcome to the Nottingham Emergency Medical Services (NEMS) website. We hope that you will find it easy to use and informative.
What can NEMS offer Patients?
NEMS provides urgent primary care, that is, care that would normally be provided by a GP surgery and which cannot safely wait until the surgery is next open.
However NEMS is not intended to be a convenient alternative to your own GP surgery and does not deal with:
- routine matters such as changing an appointment time
- general enquiries for health advice and information
- non-urgent problems that can safely wait until your surgery is next open
- repeat prescriptions when you will come to no harm from waiting until your surgery or pharmacy is next open
- 'walk-in 'patients who have not been through the telephone assessment process
- life-threatening (999) emergencies, serious accidents or injuries
If you need your GP urgently when your surgery is closed, you should ring your usual GP surgery telephone number. You will hear a short message telling you the surgery is closed and asking you to hold on if your call is urgent.
Your call will then be transferred to a call-handler who will:
- Check that your call is not about a life-threatening (999) emergency, in which case an ambulance is needed.
- Check that your call is urgent and cannot wait until the surgery is next open.
- Take basic contact details including your name, address, telephone number, date of birth, GP name and surgery name.
- Take brief details of the problem you are calling about.
- Inform you that a nurse or doctor will call you back to discuss your problem and decide what needs to be done that day, if anything.
Clinical Assessment
- You will be called back by a nurse or doctor will discuss your problem and decide what needs to be done that day, if anything.
- Many problems can be resolved with telephone advice on self-care.
- Other problems require a face to face consultation and wherever possible, this will take place at NEMS main centre or a satellite clinic of NEMS.
- In specific circumstances, a home visit may be needed.
- Alternatively, the assessment process may result in you being advised to attend A&E, or the Walk In Centre.
If you would like to find out more about what will happen if you are invited to NEMS please go to Visting NEMS Primary Care Centre.
